Picking up emails on S5 mini running KitKat 4.4.2

[AC Question]

On my old iPhone I had it so that emails were only picked up when I went to the built in email app. How do I stop the emails from this phone arriving every few minutes. I have my email "Sync Schedule" set to "manual" - but the phone still dings and delivers emails when it is just sitting there. Presumably this does not affect the notification of the arrival of emails.
Not a geek - and new to Android -so simple instructions would e very much appreciated!
