Risks of unlocking your phone? Galaxy S5

A

AC Question

I'm going to be out of the country traveling for a few months so I called into my carrier Fido to unlock my phone through them so that I wouldn't need to root my phone or manually do it myself and they said that while they could unlock it there could be a possibility that when I switch to a different network my phone may be locked to the other countries network and I would need to send my phone in to Samsung for repair if that happens as a risk. Is this something that actually happens or do they just tell you this so that you don't unlock your phone? I can't seem to google any instances of it being a problem but since I only have one phone that I need to use I'd rather not take the risk.
