AC Question

I have a Nexus 4 on 4.4.4 and since a couple days ago my phone's been automatically updating Chrome even though I've disabled auto updates in the play store. I can roll back the updates but it erases my cookies each time and is generally a hassle to do. How can I fix this?

You could check if Chrome has auto updates individually enabled if you open Play Store, select Chrome and tap on the three dots top right.

This happened to me yesterday. Asus padfone x on 4.4.2. Chrome started updating itself without asking me - I stopped it, but then a couple hours later it started again. I double-checked my "google play" settings, and automatic updates were turned off. Eventually it started again and finished installed itself, to my chagrin. The new Chrome is much more google-integrated, it has animations/eye-candy that work very slow on my device. All the privacy settings got wiped out and replaced with very liberal ones. The "Back" button was removed too! F that... I'm setting my firewall(AFWall+) to block Google Play from now on.

Chrome's forced auto-update feels a lot like a virus. I am now working towards finding an alternative browser and possibly extricating myself from other G-software. It's slightly annoying, but I'm sure a better solution is out there. I'm sorry Google, but this aggression will not stand.

This situation reminds me of the "play store", where "books" and "movies" and "music" were forced upon me when I only came there to search for an app. It caused me to search for a better appstore, and I found it - it's called F-Droid, and it's much more FOSS-friendly.

There are some unhappy people complaining on the productforums.google.com site. It has only recently started happening and there is a question of whether this is intentional or a fix will appear.

Chromes auto update is a pita, especially as the latest version shows all bookmarks in a single list, making them hard to find. I've blocked Google play running in background (settings>data usage>GooglePlay>enable restrict background data) So far no more updates.

As somebody on productforums at google said (can't post link)...

"If you think this is 'accidental' or a 'fix' is on the way, then I have some swampland in Florida to sell you".

Couldn't agree more.

I'm having the same issue for about 10+ days now, and I'm constantly uninstalling the Chrome update on a daily basis! I have stock android (Moto X), so it makes it easy to revert back, but I'm worried this is destroying my phone by install/uninstalling daily.

Google needs to stop. They're p***ing me off now!
