How to get stock android text app to notify on current thread

I have a Note 3 with lollipop. I use the stock messaging app. When I'm having a conversation with someone it won't give a notification tone while you have the thread open and the screen is on.

While I see the usefulness of this feature to avoid repetitive notifications I would like to turn it off. I will send a text and set my phone down. Usually it takes a person several seconds to responds, but if they manage to respond before my screen times out then I don't know they answered.

Is there a way to turn that feature of so it always notifies? I like the stock app and don't really want to change.

Welcome back! I know that you can't do that on Nexus phones, so I suspect the same is true for the Note 3 (i.e., for the stock Messaging app). You'd have to look into a 3rd party app.

Most messaging apps won't notify you of a new message in the thread you're looking at. You're normally at the latest message in the thread, and will see a new one coming in.
