Google play service sync error in China draining all my battery. Help please

In my battery usage google play service drains between 40-70% of my battery.
I downloaded a vpn and even over several days the battery consumption from google play services goes down significantly. My battery last multiple times as long.
So the problem is obviously a sync error with google which makes a lot of sense because all google services are banned in China (not even play store is accesible, googlemail or maps or anything).
I cant have a vpn running on my phone 24/7, it drains battery as well and uses up my data internet.
So I only see 2 solutions: Either completely deinstall and get rid of all google products (wouldnt hurt anyway since I cant use any in China).
Or somehow force stop google play services to not do anything at all.

I will be staying in China for several years so waiting until I return is sadly no option

If anybody knows how to solve this problem please let me know

Root the phone and turn off all Google services you don't need (some of them are essntial for the phone to run, and are completely internal to the phone) - that's about the best you can do short of starting another revolution.
