A quick search has me believing this is another name for Android Beam, which is a method of transferring information between devices using NFC.

That said, I can't see why not. I've done Android Beam transfers between my 2013 Moto X (sporting a Diztronic case) and my Nexus 6P (sporting an Adopted case).

It works with my phone in an Otterbox Defender, and that's no thin case, so it should work in most cases. (A metal case will prevent it from working, so will a REALLY thick (half an inch, maybe) case. But the typical plastic and silicone rubber cases shouldn't cause any problem - you'll just probably have to hold the phones so close that they're touching.
