Why doesn't KitKat 4.4.4 upgrade on my Galaxy J1 smartphone here in thailand?

I've had the phone for over eight months and today was the first time updates were actually available. It took some time but finally restarted and said updates had been installed, so I figured it had upgraded from 4.4.4, which it had when I purchased it, but when I checked it had not changed at all. I don't like 4.4.4 because I have no control or way of writing to my SD card. I have Samsung Galaxy J1 model number SM-J100ML/DS I live in Thailand and Samsung's website for Thailand does not offer any information in English. There Websites for English speaking countries do not have my model number listed. What can I do? Thank you
