The SD card is brand new so I'm not sure if it's too much memory with the 32gb memory that's already on the Tab A.

Welcome to Android Central! The official specs say that it can handle up to 128 GB: Samsung Galaxy Tab A 9.7" 16GB (Wi-Fi), White

If you insert the card into your computer, does the computer recognize it? If not (i.e., if it doesn't even ask you if you want to format it), then the card is likely defective--ask for a refund.

If the computer recognizes the card, run chkdsk to look for bad sectors: [GUIDE] Using chkdsk to fix a corrupted SD card

If the tablet recognizes the card, but you're having problems saving data to it, run SD Insight to make sure it isn't counterfeit.
