My mom gave me her old phone. (It's a Central America model, which is where we're located.) When I try to delete her data by going to Settings / Privacy / Factory Data Reset, I receive an alert: "Delete Samsung account first".

My mom doesn't recall ever setting up a Samsung account. I've tried her passwords with no success.

How can I reset this phone?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Welcome to Android Central! Someone set up the Samsung account, so you'll need to figure out who did it and what the password is. This is Samsung's factory reset protection feature, much like Google's.

Try the instructions here for if you forgot your Samsung account password.

    Thanks, B. Diddy!

The link redirected me to another page, but really, going to Samsung.com and clicking on Login in the upper right corner will get you to the same form.

For others who might read this, be aware that you'll need the following information about the previous phone owner:

    First & last name
    Date of birth, including year
Email address that they used (usually Gmail)
    Access to that email address

An email will be sent with a link to change the password, and from there, you're (at least theoretically) home free!

Thanks for that info! I modified the link, but not sure if it still acts oddly. The link works for me, although the page is a little weird (with lots of broken image placeholders).
