    Do you mean your sim card. Those could be used to store a few contacts with name and numbers only.
    If they were entered as Google contacts you can get them back in Settings - Accounts - Google - Sync settings - Contacts. Likewise if it is a Samsung phone with Samsung Contacts.
    If they were only on the sim card and not merged with Google Contacts you lost them.

    If you meant an SD Card, how did that cause you to lose your Contacts, they are not normally used for Contacts storage, unless you are running a new phone with 6.0 and using the card as adaptive storage, in which case you would still have them in the cloud.

    Use an app like SMS Backup + which saves your call logs as well, if worst comes to worst.
