Samsung Galaxy Note 4 running Android Version 5.1.1
    Apple iMac running El Capitan

I have searched Google for a solution, but I seem to have tried everything! Here is what I have done so far:

    Galaxy Note 4
    1. USB Debugging ON,
2.Connected as MTP. I have turned these options on and off as well as moved between MTP and PTP. There are appears to be some sort of connection on PTP, but on MTP I get the message "Could not connect to device".

    Mac
    1. Tried around 6 USB leads.
    2. I have downloaded Android File Transfer which is the software that gives the message "Could not connect to device"
    3. I have properly uninstalled Samsung Kies (which also failed to allow a connection) through their uninstaller and ran CCleaner to ensure any residue was cleared.

    Other procedures
    1. I have turned both devices on and off
    2. I connected the phone to a Windows 10 laptop and there was a driver issue initially. I uninstalled the driver and the phone was eventually recognised
    3. I can transfer files via bluetooth

Any further ideas beyond the above would be very welcome!
