How to reset Tab 3 10.1 battery stats?

How do you reset battery stats on a Samsung galaxy tab 3 10.1? Do I need a new battery? tried the hold down power/volume button idea now it turns on and immediately turns back off. Battery still showing at 49%

Welcome to Android Central! To recalibrate the battery sensor software, charge up to 100%, then use the device until it shuts off automatically due to low battery. Then charge back up to 100%, and repeat the cycle 3 times. If the battery runs down and the tablet shuts off fairly quickly, then the battery itself is probably failing.
