Notifications on 2nd Jan moto 360

Okay so I just had a 2nd gen moto 360 yesterday, & I do love it but I'm trying to figure something out, with notifications for Google messenger and embossed by Gmail, I'm getting two sets of notifications because if I don't have the messenger for where app on my watch I can't look at my phone inbox but when I receive a notification I get that Google messenger notification and the other app notification. Is this normal?

Also what is the best texting app and email app for moto 360? Right now, I am using hangouts is that the best though? Thank you
