How can I close Google Earth when opening Email?

If I have a Google Earth kmz/kml file that is sent to me as an attachment and I open that attachment from the email in Google Earth, when I close Google Earth and try to re-open my email app, it loads Google Earth again. I cannot close Google Earth. How do I get Earth to close? This is on all of my devices, Note 4, Note 10.1 2014ed., Note Pro.

I can go to application manager and force close it, but that shouldn't be the only way to do so...

Welcome to Android Central! What if you tap the Recent Apps button and swipe away the Email and Earth apps, then open Email again?
