Firstly the contact list and called numbers , incoming calls list vanished then the phone started heating up as well. After several restarts and deleting two apps, and clearing the cache and stopping several apps from the settings app, the phone has started working again.

But please help as to how to prevent this from happening. Is there a software upgrade required and what other steps can I undertake to prevent my work from getting crippled.

Welcome to Android Central! That can be difficult to troubleshoot. It could be a 3rd party app causing the instability, or some firmware issue. A corrupt SD card can also cause issues. If you have an SD card inserted, try unmounting it (in Settings>Storage) and removing it, then see if the problem persists.

To see if it's a problem with a 3rd party app, boot into Safe Mode. On most Android devices, while powered on, press and hold Power until the Power Off menu appears. Press and hold the Power Off selection until the Safe Mode prompt appears. Tap OK. If the problem disappears in Safe Mode, then something you installed is causing the problem. You may have to uninstall apps one by one until the problem disappears. If the problem persists in Safe Mode, then it's more likely to be a hardware or firmware problem.
