If your contacts are backed up to Google you should be good. When you put your email in the new phone they'll just download right back into your people app. You can easily see what is backed up to Google by logging into your account on any device and going to Google backup or viewing your account. If they're stored on your phone they might be backed up to your SIM card. On some devices you still have to elect to do this. You can put the SIM in and manage contacts to save them on your new device. If they're purely saved to your phone and can't view the screen you could try using Android Device Manager to retrieve them. I'm not sure exactly what all you can do with that app. The device just has to be on.
