When my face touches the screen all sorts of things launch in the middle of my phone calls.

Sounds like you have a bad proximity sensor. You might need to take the phone to a repair shop.

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Some phones actually allow you to change the setting so that the screen stays on during a call (essentially deactivating the proximity sensor).
