Help rooting a Samsung Galaxy mega

[AC Question]

Yesterday, I purchased a used Galaxy Mega for my mother. The woman had restored it to factory settings. Well when we got it home it said it needed to update. We clicked ok. Now it trys to install the updates but gets to 93% and stops. Saying update failed. It then goes to booting recovery (only says this at the top ) but that's as far as it goes. I went to Samsung and they say it's rooted and it's junk..is this true? I read about Odin but it says I need to do the home, volume and power button but that does nothing. Help, please!
