Since upgrading to marshmallow, contacts and contact identification simply doesn't work:

    - All contacts are multiplied (I have at least 5 or 6 entries per contact)
    - New contacts won't save (Without error / warning. It simply wont store them)
    - Caller ID of existing contacts doesn't work. Only the number is displayed. This is true for calls and sms.
    - Apps with access to contacts (whatsapp for example) wont recognize contact names / data. Also, cant save new contacts from there either

    Solutions?

Try a Cache Partition wipe, and if no go, a Backup & Reset. Let us know if you need advice about backing up your personal data beforehand.

Or, making sure that all your contacts are Google contacts (that's the only choice there should be, IMO), check contacts.google.com. There's a tool - under More - to either eliminate duplicates or merge contacts. (If there's different information on each duplicate, like Facebook info on one, WhatApp info on another, merge them. If they're all the same [real duplicates], eliminate duplicates.) Sync your contacts and the phone should have only 1 entry per contact. And the callerID should work.

(If they're Device or SIM contacts, see the Contacts section of Backing up an Android Device to convert them, then sync them.)
