A few minutes ago my phone died. As the dead battery was shut off, there was a message flashed on the screen telling me to "not turn off the target". There was the android symbol, red and green words on the left corner and something was being downloaded. I had to take out the battery and plug in my phone to get the message off my screen. Don't know what THAT'S all about, but would love an explanation.

That is the bootloader. It always says downloading do not remove target.

    You will be fine.

To get to it you hold the home button +volume down +power.

It is possible you did that when starting it. Or some bug.
