How much data should I expect Google maps to use when navigating on a long trip? And does it make any difference if you download a map, but keep data on? (I haven't been able to determine if Google Maps uses the downloaded map even if you have a connection).

I know HERE maps has a hybrid mode, but I haven't tried it yet on Android (disliked it on my old Windows Phone). Just trying to see what Google Maps would be like.

It will use a fair bit of data and a lot of battery. Plug device into cigarette lighter socket in vehicle and use (download) offline maps. You can have the app save areas to the device memory and that way you don't use data on the road. Did that in Europe.

Just in case anyone is curious if tried it. With the maps downloaded for the whole area of the trip I used about 45MB going from North of Dallas to central Houston.
