I have an older phone running Android 2.2. I am interested in giving it to my son to use as a simple texting phone. Assuming that (1) we don't install any apps other than those already on the phone; (2) we don't use the phone for web surfing; (3) we block MMS messages from being automatically downloaded and (4) we set up a separate GMail account solely for the purpose of associating the phone with an account (but not actually using the account for anything), how much of a security risk is it to use this phone? Again, all we want to use it for is phone calls and texting.

Welcome to Android Central! For something that basic, it should be ok--assuming your son doesn't figure out how to start installing apps. You might just want to get him a flipphone instead.
