Moto X play Marshmallow 6.0 Q's

So I recently got a Moto X play (black) and my dad got the same model a bit before me. He did a system update (to Marshmallow 6.0) and now his (old SD card from his old phone) SD card won't work. The phone doesn't register it as there. If I do this update will that happen to my SD card? (Newer card)

I'd really love some help, thanks!

This is quite helpful but I need to know if there might be an issue with my Dad's card or the OS
