Why did the new updated version of the Google Play Services trash my Droid Turbo2 phone?

I updated the newest version of the Google Play Services on my four month old Droid Turbo2 phone. It continued to tell me to that the "Google Play wo't run until the new version is installed." But the the phone continued on a cycle of freezing, shutting down and then freezing again after 30 sec to 1 minute. I took phone to the local Verizon store and after 1 1/2 hrs and trying to get the cycle to stop, I was told the phone can not be salvaged. What can be done? The phone worked fine until the new version was installed. We even tried the factory reset.

What option did they offer you when they said the phone couldn't be salvaged?

surly they should be able to swap the phone for you if it's only a couple of months old?
