How do I stop audiable messages when i am talking on phone

when I am talking on my phone if a text msg comes through or another phone msg it is loud and anoying because i hear it while i am trying to talk how do i turn this off so it does not interrupt my call and i can still get notified i have a msg quitely

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Some phones have a setting to turn off audible notifications while on a call.
