My 15 year old son has a Windows Lumia which is going bad. I'm looking at replacing it with an android.
Don't want to spend a lot of money on a flagship phone as we're footing most of the cost.
Considering purchasing a new Galaxy S4 as we have a couple of extra cases lying around. I'm a little leery in purchasing refurbished as not sure how good the quality would be.
Any suggestions? I'm looking to spend around $250.

Are you willing to do contracts? If so you can get the s7 or 10 or whatever. Otherwise, the 5x when on sale possibly refurbished has fallen to that price range.

Bear in mind that with a Sammie, high quality phones though they obviously are, your son would have to get used to going bottom right for Back, rather than bottom left as on his Lumia.

Nexus 5X is the best choice, then Moto G (Gen 3) then everything else goes for higher prices. I'd lean Nexus 5X because it's one of the best phones out there and it's ridiculously affordable, whereas most other devices cone with a big trade-off between cost and performance.
