My brand spanking new phone is a DooGee X5..Android 5.1

I'd give you a link from Google but it won't let me..
Therein lies the crux of the matter.
I am not familiar with Android devices, having used an iPhone all this time.
I made the maddening discovery that Android devices are tethered to
Google in much the same way that Apple devices are to iTunes..

Anyway I learned that I had to sign in to my email to activate
    PlayStore or the browser.
    It didn't work.
I had to use WiFi to get a few necessary apps.
Everything is as it should be with WiFi..
I already have a data plan so obviously I shouldn't have to use WiFi..

So now... I have an Internet connection thanks to my data plan.
I can use WhatsApp just fine..
But I can't access the rest.
There's a lock icon in the URL..so I know the phone isn't malfunctioning.
    It's a Google sign in/syncing issue.
As it stands I can't access any search engine..Wikipedia..Gmail or
    anything seemingly Google related.

But when I type other URLs in the browser like..IMDb or BBC.com... or
USA today..it loads just fine but without the lock icon..

    What should I do?
I have signed in,adjusted the time and date..synced the account..The works..
    All to no avail..
Do the VPN settings need to be adjusted?

    What am I overlooking?
