I've got a Moto G 3rd gen (I think), I updated to Marshmallow (and find it to be a laggy mess - but that's another story). I did the part where you convert the SD card to make it an extension to internal storage.

Today my phone doesn't fully recognise my SD card. It recognises it enough to show me what is on there, and apps like Facebook etc appear on my list of apps (but not on the desktop), but when you try and run one, it refuses to get past the opening screen, says it is not responding and then crashes.

Other apps like Whatsapp, chrome etc on the main internal memory work fine, but if I try and transfer SD card apps to internal memory in Settings, it gets to 90% and then tells me there is no SD card. All of a sudden it will all work fine again - Facebook works etc and without warning it will stop again.

Any help will be much appreciated!

Welcome. A Cache Partition wipe, and if no go, a Backup & Reset, may be worth trying. Let us know if you need any advice about backing up.

Bad card, bad SD port or bad Marshmallow. Assuming the phone has more than 8GB internal storage, you shouldn't be running the card as adoptive storage anyway. (It's a band-aid until you can afford a larger phone - for 4GB and 8GB phones.)
