How can my spouse and I share and sync emails and contacts on our 5X FI phones?

Before we were on Project FI phones, we shared a single email (google mail) account. My spouse got his FI phone first and assigned "our email" to it; when I got one, I had to have a separate mail account (FI requirement). We want to share like we did before.

Set your email app - some other one, like the one you used to use - on both phones to be the same. Set your contact list - on another app - to be the same. It can be done, just not with the "improvements Google sometimes thinks you need.
