there is no icon to tell you the phone is safe to disconnect from a pc as you get when using a usb stick? I cannot find any icons at all to refer to the phone connected to a pc. I have looked everywhere. I even searched the computer drive, no luck

They're connected via MTP protocol, hence they have no safely remove button, and are not needed to be. They can be removed without repercussions.

It's not a good idea to disconnect any type of data device without unmounting it first. On bottom right corner of your PC task bar there should be a button to eject your USB device.
Use the same button to disconnect flash drives and SD cards.

If you've written to the phone, you have to unmount it. If not, just unplug it. (Writing may be delayed in the computer, so unmounting the phone forces it to complete the writing first.)

You do realize that MTP connections typically DO NOT have an unmount option right?
