how do I hook up my android to the internet so I don't use up my data

I have wifi in my house so how do I ensure the phone is using wifi instead of data

Turn on airplane mode then turn WiFi back on. That will preclude you from getting phone calls though, unless you have WiFi calling with your carrier.

You might also be able to toggle mobile data off in the quick settings from the notification shade, or in the actual settings menus (where this is varies by manufacturer).

When Wi-Fi is turned on the data should automatically turn off. Phone calls and texts do not use data but use cell network. mms will use data but you're not charged for it on most carriers.

Some apps also use only mobile data. (Some "developers" aren't really developers.)
