Why do I see black screen with clock and padlock?

I’ve just got a smart phone for the first time – a Moto G, 3rd Generation.
I was getting on OK with it set for a PIN but now somehow when I open the cover it shows, briefly, the time and a padlock. I’ve tried tapping and swiping the screen to no avail. The only way to open it is to press the power button briefly and then type in my PIN.
How can I get rid of the first black screen showing the clock and the padlock?

Welcome to the forums! On that screen you need to swipe down from the padlock and then type your PIN.
