Why has the data disappeared from my Contacts App

After the last update all the contact data disappeared from my Contacts app.

No idea - it could be the update, it could be something you did. Assuming they were Google contacts (first line when you're entering or editing a contact - ALL contacts should be Google contacts), go to Google Contacts and see if they're there. If not, click More, then click Restore contacts, and you can restore any contacts deleted during the last 30 days (selectively, so you can restore contacts deleted yesterday if that's what you want).

If they're not Google contacts, they're gone, so start re-entering them, and make them all Google contacts - they sync your contacts. (If you have a lot, I'd sync after every 25 or so, so if it all goes wrong, at least you have some of them saved.)

They are Google contacts. They are still visible on my three other devices but disappeared from my Samsung tablet immediately after the last update. The app opens but only one contact card (with my name) is visible.
