what does the magent do with a Google cardboard headset?

I put together my google cardboard Minkanak
what does moving the magnetic do on the side of the headse?
At the moment I can move it down within the gap where it sits but it returns to its orginal position is this correct or should it stay when you move it to?

That is correct. It works somehow with the phone's magnetometer, allowing you to use the magnet as a switch, since you cannot easily use the touchscreen for that when the phone is mounted in the viewer.
