the system update available message keeps on showing up when i swipe downwards, every time o download it the file size changes but it comes up again. do i just have to keep downloading it until it disappears or is something wrong?

Most likely this is the June security patch. I just got it myself on my Nextbit Robin yesterday. Make sure you are connected to your home WiFi OR another solid WiFi connection before you try the update again. Yes it SHOULD download something and then run the patch.

Welcome to the forums. Can you show a screenshot of the software version? Go to Settings>about device and scroll to where is shows what android version and build number.
