Why can't I hear people when they call?

So I just noticed that when I try and answer the phone the other person can hear me but I cannot hear a sound. Not until I hang up and call them back does everything work fine. Everything else on my phone works perfectly just the fact that whenever someone calls me I cannot hear a thing.

What carrier and what phone? Certain issues might be device related, others might strictly be due to carrier. Try going into call settings and seeing if disabling certain functions like "hd voice" and subsequent things helps the problem.
