Why does my WiFi not auto-connect unless I turn on the screen?

It will only auto connect to the WiFi when i turn the screen on. I dont have to unlock the phone just slide the notifcation bar down or touch the screen and it will auto connect. Otherwise it wont.

I have the same problem on my Sony Compact Z5 - did you get a solution?
