Short story, my mom bought an LG V10 on CL. She did good with my reminder from past long ago to check the IMEI on it, and was super excited to show me it today. It's already set up on her account and she wondered, if since paying an excellent price for it, if she could trade it in in the next few months when the new LG phone comes out. She checked it on the Verizon trade in page and discovered it's on a device payment plan.

I'm trying not to chuckle at the irony of her trying to play it safe and still failing (no fault of her own, I suppose) but does anyone know if this thing is going to go belly up on her if it's connected to her account?

I feel bad, she was so proud of herself and of course she's not going to get her money back.

Did the seller have the right to sell it?

I have no idea. It's connected to my Mom's line now no issues. I've never considered selling a phone on a payment plan, so I've never tried to sell one.

I forgot to mention it's through Big Red

The person who purchased the device from Verizon owes Verizon the money; your mother does not.

So she should be good leaving it on her account?

If the seller stops paying on the payment plan they could blacklist the device, in which case it could stop working on all major carriers. It's definitely a precarious situation, because she has little to no control over what the seller and Verizon are doing.

So miracle of miracles, the buyer refunded her money. He was unaware the phone was tied to the account as such and felt bad. I doubt it'd happen in every scenario, but I did finally get a hold of him.
