Earbuds will work on my Moto E Gen 2 but headphones will not

When I plug in my $20 Skullcandy earbuds my music will play just fine however when I plug in my $60 Skullcandy headphones it won't play at all and goes directly to the on phone speaker. I have checked for Lent and both of the plugs for the headphones are the same.
