How can i avoid losing storage space after updating my android?

I upgraded from KitKat to Lollipop and I lost more than 50% of my internal storage and have not been able to recover it... How can I avoid or minimise this?

Welcome to AC!
The firmware update took the space. There's no way you can revert this without root.
