Galaxy s5 - messaging - contact changing their phone number

[AC Question]

Trying to solve an argument with my partner here...in the call log there are deleted messages from a girl. He says that her number changed and that is why the old messages are saying deleted because they won't show. I am 150% sure this is bs. If a contact changes their number then surely the previous messages would just be displayed with the old phone number next to them?

Please confirm for me so I can have an informed argument...

You are correct... If a contact's number changes, it won't delete any old messages, it'll just list them under the old number.

Until you actually change the contact number in your phone contacts, your device will recognise the number as belonging to the contact you assigned the number to, regardless of whom it belongs to now.
