Has anyone figured out how to turn off whatsapp notifications in Android Auto?

I recently got a car with Android Auto, and was very impressed with its features. On my first drive I realized that not only does it notify me of my text messages, but also my Whatsapp messages. That's fine, however i also have a couple group chats on Whatsapp. I have turned off the notifications for these group chats on my phone, however Android Auto seems to override these settings, and still notifies me of new groupchat messages. In a 10 minute drive yesterday, i got 45 Whatsapp group chat messages, and it stopped the music and beeped every time. So annoying! If anyone knows how to change the settings for Whatsapp that would be great! I would even be happy with turning off Whatsapp notifications entirely if I have to!
