What causes system UI to stop working preventing phone screen from working as normal?

I had sought for wireless update and the phone restarted. installation continued and I guess completed. However, an inscription keeps popping up on my phone indicating: unfortunately, system UI has stopped. this has prevented the phone screen from working as normal? I can make or receive calls, can't do anything else. What could be the cause of the problem?
