android switch button..how to use it?

i wanna know how to work with the switch buttons in android.. i wanna send a char value or a string value in to a mysql database when i switched on the switch button.. how can i do that need a help with the coding..cuz im new to android
if the switch on ,it sends a value to database says "ON" and else "OFF" ..how to code this?
