Why is my volume turning all the way up by itself?

I have an HTC desire 626 and for some reason the volume continues to turn up all the way. It will turn up the volume to the max and will continue to attempt to turn it up even more. It's as if there's a ghost that keeps pushing the volume up button and it will do this with the ringtone volume setting or if i have media open it will adjust that too. At this point the phone is basically useless because I can't to anything with it while the volume keeps turning up all the way; blocking the screen and making that obnoxious sound. Has anyone had any similar problem with their phone or have any advice on how to resolve this issue?

Welcome to Android Central! Does this only happen when headphones are plugged in, or is it any time? If it's any time, then the Vol Up button is probably stuck in a pressed state, and needs to be fixed or replaced.
