What is the advantage to getting an unlocked S7 Note?

I am a long time iPhone user ready to jump over and grab a Samsung S7 Note-specifically for the waterproofing, Gorilla glass, larger screen with a smaller phone (bad eyes) and beautiful new blue color. I know with Verizon my iPhones can be used on any US carrier right off the shelf. The advantage to this is when I'm tired of the phone I can sell it as unlocked, because there's nothing to indicate the phone is a Verizon phone, without having to go through any unlocking process. Is the same true with Samsung Galaxy phones? Is there any advantage to purchasing an unlocked version? Or will a Verizon branded Note 7 work with any carrier right off the shelf?
