I am using my S5 mini to play Pokemon Go. The gps is all over the place - quite often I am 50-100m from my real position and rarely even 200m. In game I often get "no gps signal found". Walking next to my wife who is using an Iphone 5 its clear the gps on my phone is dysfunctional. On her phone the position updates flawlessly within a few meters and only very, very rarely is the gps signal lost.

Is this a common problem for the S5 mini? Any ideas on how to improve the gps reception? (No, I am not buying a new phone)

Hello. Try the app GPS Status and Toolbox. It does help get a fix when used for a while.
When I had a Galaxy Note 3 some found tightening some screws under the battery, if they were loose, helped with the antenna but I can't vouch for it even on that model.
