I discovered this works on my new Android 5 phone. Blow me down, it worked on my old Android 3 phone as well!

    1. Find a message you want to delete
    2. Maintain pressure on the message (ie: don't just tap)
    3. Make sure you're only pressing on text. If you press on an included link or phone contact, you'll probably get a screen you don't want.
    4. After a moment, a MESSAGE OPTIONS screen will pop up
    5. Hit delete, hit confirm delete on next screen

Bob's your uncle! Message gone. Interesting Google doesn't tell us about this one.

But then, Google tells us bugger all!

Isn't this in the manual? I knew this 7 years ago on my first Android (2.3) but can't remember where I learned it.

This has been a standard thing since launch if I remember correctly.
