How to set SD Card as default storage on Alcatel One Touch?

Just bought a SD card few minutes ago. Now I'm home and have no idea how to make this thing work. It shows up on my phone; if I go to Storage in Settings, the SD Card is there showing it has 14 gbs available. I've tried downloading a random app from the playstore, it keeps trying to save on internal storage. I've tried to save a photo from the internet, again it saves to internal storage. I have an Alcatel One Touch. I've google a bit already and heard some disturbing things. That Google apparently made an update where SD cards don't work anymore, is that true? If so, isn't this false advertising that Android phones are still being sold with SD card slots that can't be used? Did I just waste $20 on this thing? I still have the receipt so I can take it back, but I'm really hoping there's some way to increase storage. My phone only had 4gbs available. I don't want to spend $100 on a new phone... Please help, thanks.
