mom has an hp touchpad, said a little man on the tablet with arrow pointing down and a square in the right hand and a ball in the other? I was playing a game and it just shut down and this popped up

Welcome to the forums. Have her try a long press of the power button. This should simulate a battery pull. If the device has a removable battery, even better; pull it for about 10 minutes and reinsert/reboot.
